ShanghaiShanghai is a city near the mouth of the Yangtze River in China. The city is the largest in the People's Republic of China, and the seventh largest in the world, with an estimated 18,670,000 people living in the metropolitan area as 2004. During the Republic of China erea, Shanghai became one of the world's leading financial centers, however following the communist takeover in 1949, the city was cut-off from the world economy and went into relative decline. However, in 1992, the Chinese government authorized the market-orientated redevelopment of the city, and Shanghai now leads China's economic growth, ahead of early starters such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
